TORONTO – Canada captain Sidney Crosby picked up right where he was staying last spring, when he was hoisting the Stanley Cup as captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins: dominant.
Crosby was a one-man wrecking crew as the host Canada opened the World Cup on Saturday Ice emphatic 6-0 victory over the Czech Republic. Of course, the three points on the goal and two assists were impressive way for the defending playoff MVP of the Stanley Cup last June launch kicks off their season, but, as is almost always the case with Crosby, it’s the little things – the attention to detail – the paint the true picture.
And on this night it was a nice picture of one for the Canadian fans.
Once cornered in the early breakaway, Crosby banked home the first goal of the match Czech goalie Michal Neuvirth from the goal line. He later added an assist on a goal by Brad Marchand faceoff win by Patrice Bergeron, who has put me in mind of overtime goals drawn up in the Stanley Cup Finals against the San Jose Sharks.
As usual with Crosby the little things in the game by accident.
In the last minute of the first period, Crosby sped back down the ice to break Czech 2-to-1, and then, despite the fact that he did not receive credit for an assist, ran some interference in the Czech area by setting up a goal Bergeron with 0.7 seconds remaining in the first period to give Canadians an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
For good measure, Crosby added another goal to help the pretty Joe Thornton early in the second.
Saturday’s victory dominant has made it clear that the one who is going to bring down Canada in the tournament will have to find a way to nullify the line Bergeron-Crosby-Marchand, who had been together since Canada Hockey Jersey opened training camp.
In fact, head coach Mike Babcock penciled in offensive trio months before the Canadian team has ever come out on the ice, looking to put an end to the background, which was part of the last two Olympic Games: Who will play with Crosby?
Babcock was the coach in Vancouver and Sochi, when Canada won gold, but it took time every tournament to find wingers who meshed with Crosby. This is obviously not a problem here, as Crosby and two Boston Bruins are a force, as Canada plays a much different pace than they did in the Sochi Olympic ice size.
In short, Crosby served notice in Game 1 of the World Cup, that if he wears Penguins T-shirt or the red and white of Team Canada, it is a whole other level. Not that any of this should come as a surprise.
